REM occupies 20–25% of a healthy night and is heavily back-loaded, so cutting sleep short by an hour can remove a disproportionate share of it. REM suppression is strongly associated with alcohol, cannabis, SSRIs, and sleep deprivation; rebound REM after abstinence is normal. Lower REM percentage in large cohort studies is associated with higher all-cause and dementia risk, making it a marker worth tracking over months rather than reacting to night by night.
